Along I19 towards the mexican border, it looked as if one single match could easily make an already crispy desert look like miles of burnt toast. The sonoran desert filled with cottonwood, acacia and mesquite trees, eagerly waiting for spring rains to provide that much needed drink, is beyond dry.
So what the heck was the gotham girl doing near the mexican border? Paul Bond is his name, but we’ll come back to him in the next post.
A wonderful evening at the Tubac Golf Resort and Spa, nestled in the cozy little artist community under the shadows of the Santa Rita and Tucamcacori Mountains in Tubac, Arizona. (You may have seen it if you’ve ever watched the golf-themed movie Tin Cup, starring Kevin Costner.) It was a reunion of sorts, as my first visit to the property was 20 years ago with many return visits during those first few years. But this time it’d been about ten years and many changes awaited. After a quick dinner in the Stables Bar & Grill where sombreros lined the walls and worn saddles provided seats at the bar, a walk through the property revealed many additions and property expansion. But the old, quaint feel of the resort, with the aroma of mesquite floating in the air, remained unchanged.
An evening of laughter over great legs, a good nose and bits of tannin. Yes, an in-room wine tasting with no need of a designated driver. Only what seemed a few hours later, the morning sun peeked in, waking to a sea of white downy fluff that made the short night feel like a dream. After a good hearty breakfast, overlooking the mountains and lush golf course, the art galleries beckoned us for a quick visit before we headed home.
A short trip, but a return already on the wish list for a future rendezvous.
P.S. Nothing like a girlfriend retreat!
