What’s so unique about the walking tours conducted by the WTC visitor center? How about hearing first hand from volunteers whose lives were profoundly changed by the events on 9/11.
We met at 120 Liberty Street for a 1.5 hour tour with most of it taking place indoors, along the windows of the World Financial Center. Maureen was our tour guide and she shared facts, thoughts about that specific day and her personal story of losing her husband. He was a lieutenant for the NYFD. She was amazing and it was absolutely the most memorable tour I’ve ever taken. Thank you Maureen for making it so special! I will never forget how you conducted the tour and how meaningful you made it for all of us.
The entry to the Winter Garden Atrium in the World Financial Center. It reopened one year later and was the first major structure to be completely restored following the attacks.
Even though we were unable to get very close to the American Express Memorial, the Eleven Tears was a sight to behold. In tribute to the eleven American Express employees who lost their lives, a tear-shaped Brazilian quartz was carved with eleven sides and hangs from eleven thin cables over the center of an eleven sided back granite pool. Water droplets drip representing tears. Incredible.
From the outside looking in…
There is progress at the sixteen acre sight. We were told the developers remain confident the freedom tower will be completed by 2013 and portions of the area that will hold the reflecting pools are beginning to take shape. At least 16 of the 400 or so trees were recently planted so that increases my confidence level for an unveiling in 2011.
This tour is a MUST if you are visiting NYC.

Hi Robin,
Thanks for sharing the American Express photo and information. I was working at Amex in Phoenix during 9/11 and spent 3 months on the ‘Recovery Team’. I have saved the Amex magazine that profiled those 11 colleagues. It brings me to tears every time I open it up. What a beautiful memorial. Great job American Express!

I bet spending 3 months on the recovery team was an experience. We were told that the eleven employees were all very good friends and did many things together outside of work. I can’t imagine how hard that would be on all those families. Thanks for posting!

Thanks for reminding me, this is a place I really want to visit again. If you remember, we were in NYC early December. We walked by the rubble (it was all fenced in) but we were able to see the devastation from far away. I will never forget the heavy/sad feeling in my chest and light headed sensation___I had a sense that so many of the souls had not moved on. I hope to make it to NYC again next year. Hugs BB
