Thought that title would get your attention! Welcome to Amsterdam, one of the few places in the world where prostitution and smoking pot are legal.
So let’s start with the weed or in some circles it’s known as cannabis. The first lesson is the difference between a coffeeshop and a cafe. A cafe sells…well coffee and light meals. And a coffeeshop? A licensed seller of cannabis products. And yes, in a coffeeshop there’s a menu…with selections typically divided into weed, hash, pre-rolled joints and get this..space cakes. Pricing varies by grams, bags and individual joints. And another little tidbit…you can purchase at one coffeeshop and visit another. What Dutch hospitality! But, of course in appreciation for visiting their establishment, by all means buy a coke or something…
The owner of this shop certainly used his marketing skills to name his shop. Popeye always had a pipe! Start your day in the happy box with a happy breakfast!
Space cakes…space brownies…space muffins…now if this was New York City they’d have to include the calorie count!
The benefits are strongly advertised…Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s, Turette’s, Asthma to name a few. Really? And yes, there’s a museum too…but by now you know I’m really not into most museums…
How about a major in cannabis?
And of course everything is better with chocolate!
Yes, love is also for sale in Amsterdam. The Red Light District is famous for their Angels, but my biggest surprise was the gals in the windows during the day…but then again they are working girls!
More to come!

Yes your title got my attention 😉
I was under the mistaken impression that Amsterdam had changed it’s laws in regard to marijuana…I see I was wrong
Looking forward to more photographs

Thanks Anyes! Interesting because I too had read that! In fact there’s several articles that I found when I googled that indicated the new regs were already in place…but that obviously isn’t the case! Thanks for dropping in!

Oh, how fun to start off the Netherlands with this! HAHA!
To answer Anyes’ comment, Astrid says Amsterdam is “on the edge” of making new regulations for weed….but she also believes that no one would come to Amsterdam if weed and prostitution are no longer available. I STRONGLY disagree, of course, but who am I. Just a foreigner who loves the uniqueness of the city itself!
gotham girl says
I totally agree with you Ginnie!

It makes me smile to think that somewhere on this earth – ‘weed’ is an everyday consumer product. Thanks for the light-hearted introduction to Amsterdam ‘coffee shops’!!!
gotham girl says
Thanks Marcie! I’ve waited for years to enjoy this “scene!”

Love the space brownie … chocolate IS the perfect completion. Tourists come because of sex and weed, but if both would be restricted (and the red light district always makes me feel sick – not because of the girls, but the behaviour of some people in front of the windows) there’s still so much beauty in every corner of Amsterdam … I’ll have to post some of my actual Amsterdam pictures, too. Will be fun to see whether both of us have shot the same things, Robin!

I so agree with you Katrin! Can’t wait to see more of your photos too! Thank you!

Love the picture of the Popeye shop, great reflections. Don’t get me wrong, people will still come to Amsterdam to visit. It is an unique city with a large history. A lot of drug-tourists will stay away. I never visited a coffee-shop in my life. Love your post. It always makes me smile/proud of how others see our country.

Glad you were able to experience a coffeeshop with me in my post! Ha! Thank you Astrid!
