i scream…you scream…we all scream for ice cream!
oh…the memories…
When I was growing up we made ice cream all the time using the wooden hand cranked maker that probably doesn’t even exist today. As a family we would all take turns cranking…and the flavors were always delicious…berries out of the garden and peaches from the orchard…so yummy. Seeing the ice cream served out of these wooden barrels immediately brought back those memories…as well as hearing that far-off sound of that familiar ice cream jingle.
My how things can change…fast forward…New Yorkers have lodged a brain-freezing 7,031 complaints about music-blasting ice cream trucks in the past four years. On the western front…Scottsdale (Arizona) just recently unfroze a decades-old ban on ice cream trucks. Go figure.

You have just reminded me of the ice-cream trucks that would pass the house in San Diego where our two kids were born, Robin…and then in Pasadena and Madison, WI. Kids (and mothers!) LOVE the sound of those tell-tale bells, letting us all know the treat is coming. How could anyone NOT love that sound????

Never had homemade ice cream but we had the ice cream trucks in our neighborhood too. My three brothers and I would make a made dash home to see if we could get some money to buy the cold treats. Such great childhood fun! Great photos. Thanks for sharing. XoXo

I share those memories with you, sitting out in shady yards and taking turns cranking … my favorite was always peach. I sure wouldn’t mind getting any flavor from a pink pickup truck!

When I lived in Arkel, there would come a small motorbike (http://www.rozeboom-ijsspecialiteiten.nl/foto.html?images/gws1177a-Rozeboom-Cargobee.jpg ) not as fancy as that. The man had home made ice-cream, only two flavours…. by the sound of the motor AND bells, we would run outside and wait by the side of the road…. smartly he always came one hour after suppertime 🙂
Wonderful pictures, bringing back the memory.

What wonderful pictures and memories you brought back for everyone and yourself! Love your life growing up on the farm and all the special childhood memories you had. That fresh, homemade, hand-cranked ice cream made with fresh home-grown fruit sounds so great.
I lived in the projects in Brooklyn until I was almost 10. We had Tony the Ice Cream man and Sam the Candy Man. Sam sold candy out of the back of his rust colored station wagon. Can you imagine getting away with that today? My Dad had this collection of real silver coins. When we didn’t have money and just needed that fix, we would steal a few coins from his collection. Sam and Tony must have loved seeing us coming – The stupid kids giving him real silver coins! My father never did find out.
We lived on the 7th floor and my brother (who is 10 years older than me and 5 years older than my sister), would send my sister down the street for the goods and made a bucket on a string and had my sister fill the loot and pulled it up. My sister said he used to knock peoples screens out of their windows banging the bucket into them.
Then when we moved to the suburbs in Long Island, the sound of the ice cream man was certainly a treat!
I agree with E’claire, how can anyone be annoyed by the sound of the ice cream truck. Crabby people, indeed.
Thanks for sharing the pics proving that everyone around the world loves the ice cream man and thanks for the memories.
Love you, always and forever.

We never had an had an ice cream man! We had to walk with a couple of coins in our hands to the ice cream parlour and the best were the days when we were allowed to have 2 flavours!
Now whenever I have the time I make my own….but with a machine ! No hand churning.
Wonderful pictures you brought from your trip! The old gentleman so obvious enjoying his ice cream in the shade.
