From the moment I heard Trysette’s music, I fell in love with her voice. It immediately made me think of Emmylou Harris…Sarah McLachlan…a touch of Adele…a little raspy and oh so heartfelt. So appreciative of her allowing me to use one of her songs with my collection of children’s faces of Nicaragua. From her album…Le Cafe Ancien…the song, That Face.
As the taoist proverb says…the journey is the reward…
The Rio Coco was definitely a journey….
and oh what a reward to be able to photograph and share these adorable faces!

How sweet all their faces; they tell a story.

The combination of your photos showing the faces of the children, with Trysette singing her song that face, is just heartwarming. Thank you so much for sharing. XoXo

A perfect combo…even when I was in the villages that song came to mind…one of my favorites of hers…but then they all are! Thank you sweet! xoxo

Sweet faces … lovely voice … a most rewarding journey for you, and for us because you share with such an open heart.

Oh..how sweet. THANK YOU!!

You can be downright proud of that video, Robin. (You protest too much!) The captures of those faces are worth a book, too. Have you thought about that?
gotham girl says
Oh I know…a perfectionist in certain ways…trust me, the folks who worked with me in corporate were driven nuts by me, ha ha! I have thought of a book for myself…actually after I saw it at a friend’s house…Steve McCurry’s Portraits. It just gave me the idea of compiling all my portraits into one. Oh one day! Thank you…always!

Where to start? First, Trysette’s music is enthralling. I’ve tracked her down on YouTube and can’t wait to purchase some of her music. Thank you for introducing me to her. Her music lifts my spirit – it moves me deeply – and just as in photography, isn’t that the definition of success?
Second, your video of the children living along the Rio Coco is amazing! Mostly, I am struck by the power of simple smile, eye contact, and context. Makes me wonder of the people who make videos to solicit contributions to help children in less developed countries have it all wrong. They usually take pictures of children who are forlorn and malnourished. Perhaps focusing on what we want to achieve – smiling happy children – is a better incentive to give than the focus on what we want to avoid?
And finally, you often find the quotes that speak to me personally. And on this particular day . . . when my mother just called with yet another mini-crisis, I remind myself that the journey of this life is a reward.

So happy you enjoyed her music…she’s so talented and working so hard! And yes, so agree! I read somewhere if you as a photographer aren’t moved by an image when you see it to photograph it…why do you think it’ll move someone else? Food for thought. We are so on the same lines of thinking about this video. When I finished and walked away from it and came back to it…I thought exactly the same. Why do we think that showcasing poverty is the answer? These children have nothing, but everything… Hang in there gal! Always in my thoughts…and always enjoy your visits!

The collection is impressive, Robin, you’ve captured a variety of emotions. I’ve been thinking recently about how expressions are telling stories in portraits, a smile may not always be necessity, on the contrary…
I also like the music, it’s been a good choice!
gotham girl says
Totally agree Petra…there’s so much in a simple expression…thanks for dropping in!
Astrid says
The music is wonderful and the Vimeo is beautiful, all those smiling kids with laughing eyes. What makes it that the eyes of the girl in the big photo are not smiling. There might be a whole story behind that facade. Are children in countries like that growing up too fast by what they experience? My guess is yes.
Thank you for showing the pictures and showing that you made escape their world for a few seconds and made them laugh……. and happy.
Love and hugs.
gotham girl says
Thanks Astrid! Yes, agree about the girl…not sure and it’s doubtful we will ever know… I so agree with you about these young children growing up so fast…It’s like they have no other choice but to find a man and start the process all over again. It was eye opening…

That is a great image and the music and pics sit exceptionally well together.
