At first glance the Recoleta Cemetery is a city within a city, meaning there are streets and alleyways winding throughout a city of massive and adorned mausoleums. Many are polished marble and ornately decorated. Often tourists will visit the cemetery ultimately to visit Eva Peron’s final resting space. That’s a short description from my first visit a number of years ago.
Since this was my second visit and now with my photography passion…let me just say it was a totally different experience.
Many of the tombs are very personal with symbolic objects and mementoes. If you stop and spend time looking through the windows or wrought iron doors, it’s amazing what can be seen. A photographer’s dream and especially if the photographer adores wabi-sabi. Sound familiar? Of course the sights I’m drawn to are the abandoned ones; dusty with broken objects, overgrown and often extremely creepy.
If you’re interested in getting an overall feel for the cemetery you can check out this link. My captures are a touch different, and with so many to choose from I’ll just share some of my favorites from the afternoon of wandering around. I could spend days photographing in this cemetery and unfortunately the open hours are not conducive to the beautiful morning or evening light…and it’s often quite difficult to get your lens between the wrought iron bars, but that just adds to the capture and to the experience that any photographer would die for….and did I mention that admission is FREE. It just can’t get any better than that!
Coming up? A day in Colonia, Uruguay!
