No better way to escape the heat of the city than to jump on a train to Fire Island.
the blues were mesmerizing…every shade possible…
Fire Island, New York. To get your bearings, Fire Island is a large island parallel to the south shore of Long Island, New York. A train ride (via LIRR) from Manhattan will get you to Bayshore, Long Island train station and then a taxi, bus ride or walk (about a mile) to the ferry station for the 30 minute ride to Fire Island. Yep, one of those planes, trains and automobiles kinda days. Centuries-old maritime forests, 32 miles of sand dune beaches, and more deer sightings than I’m sure any local desires. Before Hurricane Sandy, the description would’ve been…pristine sand dune beaches, but it’s amazing how quickly the island has pulled it together since then. Still lots of work to be done, but because I only experienced a few sections of the island, it really did feel to be in major recovery mode.
What was so enjoyable about the island? Besides the tranquility, it was the lack of cars. Instead? How about 30 miles of boardwalks and 100 miles of hiking trails. Such a diverse island comprised of 17 different communities, each one with its own flavor. Some very artsy, some very wealthy, some you just have to question. A bohemian feel. A place where bare feet rule…along with a bicycle and a red radio flyer wagon.
Just can’t wait to return…soon…very soon.

I just found your blog while searching for things to do on Fire Island and have to say that your photos are stunning. I was wondering if you would mind sharing what part of the island the second photo with the tree stumps was taken. It looks like a gorgeous spot and I’d love to visit.
