So how did the Coney Island Mermaid Parade get its name? Dick Zigun — the unofficial mayor of Coney Island founded the parade in 1983. “Coney Island had a rich history of parades from 1903 till the 1950s,” says Zigun. “One night there would be the Firemen’s Parade, the next day would be the Policemen’s Parade and so on.” As Zigun wandered the avenues of Coney Island…some called “Mermaid,” “Neptune” and “Surf” — well something clicked for him and that’s how the Coney Island Mermaid Parade got its name.
Something for everybody at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade…

This is as close to neon as I could get this week!

They had some fun and colorful participants at that parade. It reminds me of the times I’ve visited Bourbon Street in New Orleans. Blessings!

Terrific photos! Of course, how could you miss with those amazing models? 🙂
Yep, photographing a parade like this is pretty much a no brainer. With the exception of two cops standing directly in front of me who wouldn’t budge!
Robyn, these are awesome! Thank you for sharing.
Thanks Bella!
