Part exhibition, part awareness…

The Water Tank Project launched this summer and gives us artwork wrapped around one of New York City’s most prolific icons…the water tanks! The organization behind it uses the artwork of established and emerging artists as a way to call attention to the global water crisis. Like many, I’m a lover of the water tanks and to see them get all prettied up is just brilliant!
Introducing the artists for these two tanks…
Laurie Simmons: Since I moved to New York many years ago I’ve wondered what it would be like to swim in a water tank. The Love Doll gets to enact this fantasy for me.
Odili Donald Odita: I want to make an image-sign that address the vital power of water, and its charge like an electric current through infinite space. My image flows like a wave, making reference to its material mutability, and picking up local color in movement along its way. With hope in mind, I want my image to embrace the water tank, as water itself embraces the entirety of the world – round and round, continuous, forever.
According to the organization’s map…there are six tanks decorated so far…with more to come. So when I come across them, I’ll show you more in the future! Interestingly, this blog post was going to be all about the opening of the phase three of the High Line. Arriving just a touch too early for good evening light, I wandered along the previous phases to pass the time. It would also give me an opportunity to see what’s new, as well as pushing me to find different perspectives to photograph some of my favorites like the one below.
as well as this adorable Kate Spade billboard…
and a chance to play with reflections…
So imagine my disappointment when I headed back to phase three and it had closed for the evening. Not sure I understand why the early closure…but it’ll just provide another opportunity to return…I never tire of the High Line so stay tuned for another update on phase three in the future…it’s really very, very cool and an absolute must for visitors.

You KNOW I’m one of those who adores the water tanks, Robin, so I’d go back to NYC just to see the artwork on them. WOW. How cool is that. Your city just gets better and better all the time, thinking up new ways to be THE city of the world. I love it.
And yes, I can hardly wait to see Phase Three of the High Line, after seeing the first two. I know you’ll go back and see everything with new eyes…yet again. Thanks for giving it all back to us.

Those water tanks are very cool. I love the one with the love doll swimming. I just watched a program a few weeks ago about how those water tanks are built and maintained. Very interesting. The Kate Spade billboard and the reflections photos are stunning, as is all of your work. Thanks for sharing and keeping us updated on the progress of “your city.” Love and hugs! xoxo
