Here’s to another “done!” on my long list of experiences in NYC. As much as I was looking forward to the art exhibit and entertainment on America’s only surviving steam-powered lighthouse tender ship…the Lilac…it was the beauty of the ship itself that was the darling of the exhibition…the beauty of being imperfect.
I’m enamored with the decayed, the rusted, the old…it’s the wabi-sabiness that totally takes my breath away. The abstracts resulting from the peeling and cracking of paint from the Lilac’s ceilings and walls…the texture, the colors, the designs…the compositions are endless.
Today the Lilac is home for a number of exhibitions and community events…with its preservation project going strong…on the Hudson…Pier 25…NYC. If you happen to be in the area on Saturday, June 27th…there’s an artists mid-summer party and an opportunity to catch the golden hour as it runs until 9:00 p.m.
And speaking of steam-powered and the only one in existence today…I’m so looking forward to riding the 611 with my mom (in Virginia) in a few weeks…the passenger train built by the Norfolk & Western Railway in 1950 is back in all her glory! My mom’s dad (my grandaddy) worked the boiler room back in the day…and yes, I’m sure there’ll be a few photos involved!
The abstraction of the peeling paint is beautifully contrasted with the image of the vessel. Beauty on many levels.
Thanks Elena!
Yup….beauty and art in everything…period!
Period is right! Thank u!
Wow, very wabi-sabi, Robin. Can see the images within each one so clearly. Ink blots, shmink shots, the shrinks have nothing on your images!
So excited for you and mom going on the 611, especially knowing that your grandaddy worked in the boiler room. I’m sure with your beautiful personality and face, they’ll let you wear the stripped conducters hat and drive that baby and get into that steam room for photos.
Definitely has been on my to-do list, as well. I’m so excited to know about this one in Roanake.
Looking forward to seeing and reading all about it.
Please let me know if you have any time when you’re in VA.
Thanks so much for sharing.
Love you.

Thanks Lisa! Will let you know about time in Roanoke! xoxo
Beautiful!
Thanks my dear!
I especially love that diptych, Robin, it takes my breath away. Great idea!
