Walking through New York City and seeing the amazing variety of daffodils popping up everywhere…prompted a google search. Do you know there’s somewhere between 40 to 200 species and over 25,000 cultivated varieties…now that’s a lot of different daffodils! And can you believe the last bulb count for the city was around five million? The largest volunteer effort in the city’s history…since 2001…parks, schools, businesses, individuals have (and continue to) plant daffodil bulbs as a living memorial to September 11. When I learned that six years ago…that daffodils had been planted in remembrance of those who perished during 9/11…I can no longer look at a daffodil without thinking of all of the lives lost…a touching memorial that will continue to remind us year after year…
Sharing some images for my impressionist photography class…taken while enjoying an early morning walk in Central Park and looking at thousands of daffodils!
We’re not bursting with bloom…yet…but we’re getting there!

Oh, so pretty! I’m wondering if daffodils are the same as what we call buttercups and I’m so happy to know the connection of these perfect little flowers in your city with 911 … but I sure wish there had never been a 911.

Thanks Susan! Daffodils and buttercups are different, but many people do think they’re the same! Regardless, they’re all beautiful, right? Hope you’re seeing some color by now!! xo

What a great way to “thumb” (think Barbra!) 9/11, Robin. I had not heard of that, so thanks for sharing. Tomorrow (Monday) Astrid and I will drive out to see the tulip fields…what Holland is known for, of course. I hope they’re up by now (they’re up here at De Lingeborg, where we live).
I bet you’re having so much fun with your impressionistic class. WOW. Please keep showing us your creativity!
gotham girl says
Yes, and from what I’ve read…the first huge batch of bulbs came from where else…your country! Love that connection! Oh can’t wait to see images you capture from the tulip fields! I so want to see that one day! Yes, having fun with the class and experimenting a lot! THANK YOU!

Love your impressionistic photos! Do you do it all with camera movement? The bottom image looks like a Lensbaby photo; I’ve been learning about those lately and I love the effect.
gotham girl says
Thank you! Yes, this is all camera movement. You made me think about the lensbaby though…I won one at a B&H giveaway a few years ago and really have never used it. I need to dig it out! I need to visit your site and check out your photos!!

We had the same idea about the zoomlens and the flowers. I love the effect it gives. Yesterday we were at some tulip fields and it was incredible. Spring is everywhere we look.
Absolute fabulous pictures.
Love and hugs.
