Jefferson Market Garden
Greenwich Village, Manhattan
Spring is here in the city and it’s red, yellow, blue and gorgeous! My first visit to the Jefferson Market Garden on Greenwich Avenue between Sixth Avenue and West 10th Street in the historic neighborhood of Greenwich Village.
Seems there’s been quite the history here…the Jefferson Market was leveled in 1873 to make way for a courthouse and in 1931 the Women’s House of Detention was built. Then in 1960’s the prison was demolished and the Village residents organized to create the garden as a public green space. Yeah!
I’ve visited lots of gardens…community, residential and botanical…but have never seen such perfect specimens of tulips in my life! Oh my, hours could’ve been spent at this garden. Bravo to Susan Sipos the chief horticulturist and her volunteer staff at the garden. Oh, and according to their website…the rose garden is a June highlight. Trust me…I see a return visit in my future!

I think sometimes the tulip specimens are better outside of the Netherlands, Robin. How strange is that! But I do see lots of yellows and reds planted side-by-side everywhere I go. CLASSIC. I love these new places you explore to show us. Thank you.

Thanks Ginnie! These tulips were beyond amazing…and I can’t even imagine what it would be like to see fields and fields of them in your country!

Glorious colors! I love tulips and plant them randomly in my garden and every spring I am surprised where they pop up.
I you ever have the chance of visiting the Tulip Museum in Amsterdam…..go! Such a variety.

Oh, me too! Wandering around in that one made me think about how much I’m looking forward to visiting the community gardens in the East Village! Love!! Thanks Frissy!

Oh my! How lovely! The colors are gorgeous and as always you do such a fabulous job capturing the essence of them in your shots. I need to plan a trip home for June so I can partake of the wonder of the Rose garden. Thanks for sharing.

Oh wow. Those colours are really amazing. I live near a place called Hampton Court Palace, where Henry V111 used to while away the hours by chopping his wives heads off. Nowadays, things are a bit quieter, and the gardeners have resorted to planting things to keep themselves entertained. Nothing as colourful as the wonderful plants you show, but still very nice in that ” Lets not make a fuss British way.”

You so crack me up Ducky! Glad things are a bit quieter in your hood, ha ha! Always…thank you for visiting and commenting!

Fabulous shots of the flowers, I agree with Ginnie. Sometimes I see flowers that are so pretty and NOT on Dutch soil. Tulips are wonderful everywhere.

I can’t even imagine the scenes you all must have in the Netherlands! After riding through the polder with you two…I can’t imagine what it would be like with it filled with tulips! Thank you!!!

Oh my, how gorgeous!
What an interesting history of the Jefferson Market. Such a paradox – a courthouse, women’s detention center and now a beautiful flourishing garden. All of that beauty on the same soil of all of that human suffering. Maybe each flower represents each soul who has had some tie to the history. OR, maybe I’ve been sniffing too many flowers. Just kidding, LOL!
BTW – Counting Ducks cracks me up, too. It’s always a double pleasure to not only be a part of your life by enjoying your posts, stories and YOU but to get to know your other friends and followers throughout the world through their comments! You’ve got a lovely bunch of us friends.
XOXOXOXO
