The north end of Central Park…I love that area because there’s so few people…it’s rarely explored by tourists…which is exactly why Central Park wanted to showcase this area with the art exhibition…Drifting in Daylight. Just as the title suggests…as one meanders the paths…the exhibition’s emphasis was on exploring…the unexpected…awakening the senses…a “playful trail of performances…” all in tribute to the creative designers of Central Park…Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux. I ask myself all the time…how could they know back in 1857 that their design would be so perfect after all the changes and growth so many years later? They intentionally designed areas away from the noise of people and vehicles…and remember cars weren’t even an issue back in those days. Close your eyes and you could be in any forest…anywhere…so hard to believe you’re in the middle of one of the largest cities on earth.
Coming across the dancers in the “loch” area of the north end…it was if little forest nymphs just appeared out of nowhere…moving along with the current of the stream…where you hear nothing but birds and the rush of a distant waterfall…yes, we have waterfalls in Central Park…five of them. The perfect venue for the dance piece by artist and choreographer Lauri Stallings. This little video will give you a feel…
Capturing both the still images and the video was hard and exhausting…all because of a couple of photographers with zero manners…not to mention people everywhere. As a photographer I try hard to be courteous to other photographers…but that was not the case at this event…they were either totally clueless or total schmucks. Anyway, always a learning experience…

On another note…here’s the new look! I just have to give kudos to Laura…the website designer…problem solver extraordinaire…and owner of Pixel Me Designs. Her ability to communicate via emails to totally design a site is just beyond me. (Not that she doesn’t own a phone…just my preferred way of working on something like this!) Thank you so much Laura…you make it all seem so easy!
So take a look around…not a huge difference from my previous look…which Laura also designed. As mentioned in the previous post, the portfolio piece of it will take a while for me to build, but I’ll keep you posted as it grows and hopefully the email and rss feeds will work to keep you all in the know! Fingers crossed! Thanks always for following along…
Oh…gosh…gotta tell you about seeing (a sneak preview!) of the new documentary on Amy Winehouse last night at the Lincoln Center. Oh my…where do I begin. First, I was really saddened by her death back in 2011. Her voice has to be one of the most unique voices of all time. What a shame for someone so talented to travel down such a dark path…and the documentary shares it all. I believe I understood it’ll open around July 10th in theaters…and make sure you bring tissues. I so enjoyed the interaction between Amy and Tony Bennett…and he summed it up perfectly near the end of the movie…Life teaches you how to live it…if you live long enough. Oh how true…
More soon! gg

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, the new look of your blog. I especially love that when I click on the still photos at the top of your page it shows photos of where you live, i.e. “your NYC” and your Arizona home ,and places you have been in between. And that at end of the blog post it takes us to your Instagram photos. Laura did a REALLY good job pulling all your thoughts together in respect to how you want your blog to be laid out… Love it and you, MORE!!! I

I’m sorry you once again encounter rude photographers. I’m sorry, but I always chuckle when you describe your annoyances. I love the way you express yourself.
You did a great job with the video and photos, despite the rude people.
Love the new look and categories of the blog and your updated bio, it looks great!
Thanks as always.

Stunning photos & video and I really love knowing about this part of Central Park. This is where we need to spend some time … I’m beginning to forget what quiet sounds & feels like!

As others have said, the new look to your Blog is very sophisticated, and very pleasing to the eye. Those dancers you have captured so brilliantly are magical. A really good painter or photographer somehow captures the spirit within when they paint or photograph a subject, and you have done that so subtlety here. Bravo to you on several levels. I recommended your Blog to someone for just these qualities, and it is so nice to see them exhibited so clearly here

Robin, it was such a nice surprise to get an e-mail today with your new post. It does work again! I keep my fingers crossed for you and your adventure with the new look of your blog. It’s good to make a change here and there and I’m looking forward to more photos in your portfolio, it looks great. By the way, I was surprised not to hear any music in your video, just the birds… In that way, the dancing felt both raw and ethereal, what a combination! 🙂

Thanks Petra! Appreciate all the nice feedback! Yes, I only heard birds during the art installation, so just wanted to share what I heard!

Robin, This little Comment box will not hold all that I want to say! So, I’ll try to keep in short. First, LOVE the blog update – clean and fresh and I adore that your images have so much space. Laura’s work is professional and beautiful. Second. your images of the dancers are exquisite. I am wondering about your camera settings . . . you did a great job in what looks to be low light. Truly outstanding! The black and white conversions are superb and exactly the right feel for these photos. The hard and exhausting part of the pictures and videos, I totally get! And finally, I enjoy when you share little tidbits of your life, like your take on the Amy Winehouse documentary . . . a very poignant reminder to me to count my blessings and embrace every day.

You are so sweet! Thank you! So to address your point about camera settings, I’ll have to look…but what you really are seeing is my playing around with contrast in Lightroom. It was actually one of those days that the sun was in and out and of course it was in a very wooded area…but it’s the contrast that makes it appear that way. I just wanted to give it that “moodiness” so reflect what I felt during the shoot. Hope that makes sense! THANK YOU always for dropping in and spreading your good cheer!

Robin, these photos are amazing! After watching the video with all the vivid color, I think your choice of black and white was perfect. It draws attention to the lines of the body and the face instead of the colors. Great work (despite the rude photographers)!

Thanks Maery! So appreciate you dropping in!!

I love to watch good dancers, the way the body moves, the ribs, the bones and muscles, all of this with the perfect fabric that covers it makes it even more magical… naked dancer or with the perfect fabric covering the body,,, my way to see its beauty… in this series, i don’t know why, the movement in the fabric, the softness gets me… love it
