A sweet ride! Amazing to think there could be 125 of us in this little cabin!
If you’re looking for tranquility and skyline views…then a ride from Manhattan across the East River to Roosevelt Island is the ticket. A surreal experience, just gliding across the air at about 16 miles per hour and within four minutes…landing on Roosevelt Island. Roosevelt Island is also reachable by subway, but there’s no better way to be up close and personal with the Queensboro Bridge and the East River than by riding the tram.
Roosevelt Island is a waterfront community (visualize the shape of a two-mile-long baguette) located between Manhattan and Queens and is technically considered part of Manhattan. Heading south once off the tram, you’ll encounter ivy-covered ruins of the neo-Gothic small pox hospital opened in 1856 and the Strecker Memorial Laboratory, a building built by local prisoners. You see back in the day, the island was a place of quarantine, the ill, the criminal and the insane. Today this area of the island houses part of the Coler-Goldwater Specialty Hospital and the Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park.
Roosevelt Island is a place to relax, take in the views and have nice riverside walks without crowds. Or…perhaps a stopover before heading over to Long Island City, Queens to the Brooklyn Grange flagship farm on the Astoria side of Long Island City where they hosted several films from the Rural Route Film Festival. Beautiful evening!
P.S. Thank you to those of you who have commented on my new blog look! Learn more about the person behind it all here!
