“No photos allowed?” How does one see this and not take a photo? (Ok, shame on me.) So just remember, if you go to the Mahayana Buddhist Temple in Chinatown, photos are not allowed. Located at the foot of the Manhattan Bridge, today the building is easily missed because of all the scaffolding so look for two giant golden lions at the entrance. Ah, the sweet scent of incense and a chance to cool off. For a dollar donation you can get your own rolled, rubber banded fortune. Excited to say that mine read “probability for success is excellent, work hard so that your dream will come true.” So I politely whispered to Mr. Buddha that I did work hard and my dream had come true. (Who gets to live in an incredible city like NYC and explore and take photos?)
Now I’ve read this particular space hasn’t always been a temple. In its previous life it was the Rosemary Theater, an adult movie theater. Now that’s a rebirth! Must return for a service and to see if any kind of tours are offered. The temple is fascinating and I’d love to learn more.
There have been a few visits to Chinatown in the past, but there’s so much more to discover. But on a hot, humid day in NYC you don’t linger long.
From the safety of the UK can I thank you for being naughty and taking this photograph. Another lovely place you’ve made available to me. We salute your bravery
Oh, CD…love when you visit! Thank you!
Yes in deed, you are truly a VERY brave soul my sweet friend… Thanks for sharing. Very interesting to learn about the history of the temple…XXOO MORE!
You would’ve really liked it! Besides, don’t think you’ve been to Chinatown yet, right? xoxo
Ahhh-someone who thinks alike! I don’t think this serene Buddha minds having his picture taken!
But still-very brave! A good week with more exciting excursions for you!
Every day in this city is an exciting excursions! Thanks so much for following along!
Wow, wish I was there, too.
You would love it!
You go girl, rules were made to be broken, it’s exhilirating to be naughty! Love your fortune, dear Robin.

For buying the $1 fortune, I think you paid your penance, Robin. I’m a happy camper for you…and us. 🙂
Oh, good way to look at it! Thanks!!
‘work hard and your dream comes true’….
For $1, so true indeed.
No pictures allowed, I would become an illiterate on the spot…… good for you, this is a too good statue not to capture.
I always love your stories about NYC 🙂
“illiterate on the spot” – LOVE that Astrid! Thank you!
You are indeed fortunate to live in such a stimulating and varied city. I probably would have tried sneaking a shot of that statue too.
So fortunate Vicki! I count my blessings daily to have this dream come true! Thanks for visiting!
How I would love to get my fortune told there …
a beautifl picture!
Put that on the list for your visit next year! 🙂
Here’s to rebirth!
