It’s amazing to think there are over 12,000 yellow cabs running around in NYC.
Because I get asked this question so often from visitors, I thought I’d share a tip for you all who plan a trip to the Big Apple one day:
It all has to do with the little light on top of the cab…
When no lights are lit, they already have a fare. Meaning quit standing there like the statue of liberty trying to hail that particular cab.
When the number as well as the side lights are lit, the cab is off-duty. Meaning he has no thoughts of even coming near you.
When just the center number is lit, the cab is available. Meaning he will probably pick you up, but only if he feels like it.
Oh…and on a side note…don’t try to hail a cab where the buses stop. Signed, voice of experience. Bus driver = NOT happy.
