When I think of lavender, I think of fields and fields of it in the countryside of southern France.
Who knew that 20,000 plants on 10 acres existed in Long Island not too far from MY city? Lavender by the Bay.
As I pass their small stand at the Upper West Side farmers market in front of the Natural History Museum, I stop. I breathe deep. I love the aroma and I love even more how it brings a sense of calm even in the hustle and bustle of an outdoor market.
The most adorable gal with a sweet French accent provided a very important tidbit. When the smell starts to fade just crush the blossoms to release the oils which in turn revives the scent. Who knew?
I see a train ride to a lavender farm in my future. I’ve already marked my calendar for next year’s blooming season.
