Thankfully, there’s no problem catching a cab at 3:45 a.m. Yes, that is a.m. as in the MORNING. Off to experience Paul Winter’s celebration of the 18th annual summer solstice at The Cathedral of St. John Divine. In total darkness we began to enjoy this incredible space and acoustics as Paul Winter and his consort took us on a musical journey. Players were stationed throughout the cathedral and over time the great stained-glass windows began to fill with morning light. Pure magic.
A new piece was added this year titled Song of the Elephant. Amazing sounds from tuba master Marcus Rojas combined with voices of African elephants compliments of recordings by biologist Joyce Poole direct from Kenya. Mr. Winter dedicated the piece to the individuals and organizations working to end the horrific slaughter of the African elephants. Also new this year, at the end of the performance, we were all invited to the nave for tea, coffee and organic cookies compliments of the Shumei Community of Japan.
A very special way to kick off the summer!
WOW. That’s just as good, if not better, than the BIG full moon!
I love the music, this sounds like a great experience.
Wonderful picture.
Even better than the archway concert. I’ve loved Paul Winter’s music for a long time. I can only imagine how incredible it was listening to that and watching the light come up through the windows.
That must have been a great experience…very humbling to listen to great music in such an environment.
Wow is all I can say…I can’t even imagine how special that experience was except through your words. Thanks so much for sharing. XXOO gh
