Have you ever given any thought about the efforts involved in decorating the tree in Rockefeller Center? Me either.
First though, can you only imagine a 70 foot tall/40 feet wide tree being carried on a huge trailer down 5th Avenue? Oh, and it happened to only weigh 12 tons. I happened to miss the big arrival a few days ago, so just wanted to take a peek prior to the lighting which is scheduled on 11/30 just to see what was happening. And btw, this year’s tree is a Norway spruce graciously donated by a member of the FDNY and a September 11th first responder. Beautiful.
Mega scaffolding is now in place to help the workers attach 30,000 environmentally friendly LED lights strung on more than five miles of electrical wire. 5 miles! The sheer enormity of this project is incredible.
A few other tidbits you may find interesting…
Can you picture back in 1931 the workmen putting up a tree on a muddy Rockefeller Center construction site? Did you know that in 1942 three trees were placed on the plaza, one red, one blue and one white to show support for our troops serving during WWII? Or that the Swarovski-designed star measures 9 1/2 feet in diameter and 1 1/2 feet deep and has 25,000 crystals and a million facets?
Now I have a whole different respect for that tree.
