We settled into our seats in the most intimate little off-Broadway theatre, The Irish Repertory Theatre, located in Chelsea here in Manhattan. As the theatre name implies, it’s all about the Irish. And Brian Friel, Ireland’s master storyteller, did not disappoint.
Molly Sweeney is about a woman, blind since infancy, who has an operation to restore her sight. Yep, I bet you’re thinking * happy ending * but not so much. The story, the monologue between the three characters, the setting…all an incredible drama about the terrible consequences of a medical miracle.
Inside the program there was a quote that really resonated with me after seeing the play…Learning to see is not like learning a new language, it’s like learning language for the first time…Denis Diderot
Thanks Ruthie (my blind friend from Canada who sees more than any of us) for a wonderful afternoon riveting treat!
