Romeo, oh Romeo, where the hell are you? OK, that’s my version…
Along with my friend Mary who was visiting from Scottsdale, we enjoyed the matinee performance of Romeo and Juliet at the Metropolitan Opera House. The MOH first opened in 1883, albeit a different location, but moved to Lincoln Center in 1966 when it was evident the original just didn’t have adequate stage facilities. The photo is the ceiling which will give you an idea of how beautiful and ornate it is, yet not overdone. (No photography allowed, but you know me and rules.)
I must say I thoroughly enjoyed the performance. Natalia Osipova, the Russian ballerina playing Juliet, certainly stole the show. She was intense, vulnerable, innocent, just mesmerizing…
I’m clueless about ballet (unlike my friend Mary) but for some reason the ballerina’s name kept ringing in my head. Where have I heard that name? Then it dawned on me she was the ballerina that was recently attacked (mom stop reading now) by two men who hit her in the face and ran off with her bag, which contained her pointe shoes and a small hammer she uses to shape them. By her incredible performance she had obviously put that incident behind her.
Oh, and I must say…the guys in those white leotards that accentuated those muscular butts, thighs and calves weren’t bad either. (I know, I’ll never be a reviewer for the New York Times.)
