What a pleasant surprise to come across this carousel while walking around in the DUMBO area of Brooklyn. Right now it’s being housed in a building for view only… just waiting for the move to its new home, the Brooklyn Bridge Park. This gem was born in 1922 in Ohio, but fell into disrepair and was bought at an auction in 1984 by Jane Walentas and her husband who happens to be the developer of the Brooklyn Bridge Park. Jane has spent the last 22 years restoring it and soon will be housed in a new pavilion in the park overlooking the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges. What I can’t wait for is some of the flashy upgrades once it’s moved. According to the carousel’s docent, a transparent glass pavilion will cast silhouettes of the spinning ponies across the East River at night. Can’t wait to see that and hopefully as early as next year!
