Nestled in Fort Tyron Park in Upper Manhattan, The New Leaf Restaurant and Bar has been on my list of places to visit for quite some time now. Well today the opportunity presented itself. One of our buddies from our week day cycling group is moving to Chicago and a little going away lunch was planned.
I picked up the A train at 59th Street and headed for 190th Street. I’m sitting in the subway car and after glancing around I notice that EVERYONE around me is sleeping. Now here’s what I don’t understand. How is it that people sleep on the subway and yet they always manage to wake up when we get to their stop? Why is it they don’t wake up at all the interim stops?
Anyway, lunch was lovely and a good time was had by all. Afterwards I walked around the park, a nice little gift to the city from John D. Rockefeller Jr. The George Washington bridge and large chunks of ice floating down the Hudson River made for an incredible view under the wintry sun. Unfortunately the lighting wasn’t good for taking photos because of the time of day, but I was able to capture this little guy eating some snow.
The park is also famous for The Cloisters, a branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which includes several courtyards from actual French monasteries in addition to nearly 5,000 medieval works in a reconstructed medieval monastery. When spring comes this will be on my “to do” to return and explore more of the 66 acres in addition to visiting the Cloisters. Then it was back on the subway for the ride home. You never know what you will encounter on the subway…today we were serenaded by two young Mexican boys for most of the ride back. 🙂
