News right off the press! “Another landmark this year is New York City’s passage of a law intended to increase bicycle commuting by helping cyclists park securely at their office buildings. This law goes into effect today, December 11th, meaning that even your fancy road bike could be a good choice for commuting!”
I Love it! Did you know that commuter cycling in NYC is accelerating rapidly, with a 26% increase in just the last year alone, and has more than doubled since 2005? Impressive. A lack of secure bike access and parking at the office is one of the biggest deal-breakers for commuters who want to get to work by bike, according to the state commissioner.
Take a look at this company who was named the most bicycle friendly workplace today, Ogilvy & Mather. It’s an international advertising, marketing and public relations agency. Wow, talk about taking care of their employees. This category is judged on employers efforts to install indoor bike parking, allowing bike storage near employee desks, proving showers/lockers, offering loans or reimbursements for bicycle purchases, providing free bicycle servicing, offering office bike pools, authorizing mileage allowances for cycling and holding Bike to Work Days. Ogilvy & Mather introduced itself to its new neighborhood on Manhattan’s far West Side this fall by purchasing 50 commuter bikes for employees to use to travel between meetings and elsewhere during the business day. Ogilvy & Mather provides these cyclists with helmets and access to bike parking, showers and lockers. Additionally, all employees who participate are required to take a commuter cycling training class. If you’re a commuter, I’d say it calls for a celebration!
