Yep, the big boy in the very back is THE building in MY city. The Italian Renaisssance-style building is a pre-war building, meaning it was built before World War 2. I guess that’s why the hardwood floors creak and the toilet sounds like a plane taking off when flushed. But, we’ll get back to that in another post.
There’s 17 stories and a 143 apartments which means there’s tons of people to get to know including all the doormen and porters. I’m calling one guy Sammy who is really Victor and most of the time I get Vidal and Pinot straight but not always, but I definitely know the super is Mike as he lives on my floor…but we’ll get back to that in another post too.
So just a few tidbits of history…
Scenes from the movie, The Death Wish, starring Charles Bronson in 1974 was filmed in one of the apartments…
The Gershwins (George and Ira) had adjoining penthouses and of course was the scene for many famous parties. I can just imagine Ethel Merman waltzing through the front door into the black and white tiled lobby area on her way up to audition for the musical, Girl Crazy…
Then in 1982, the son of the father who once owned the building was murdered in the penthouse by a 16 year old…
Can’t wait to dig up more dirt, oops I mean learn more about the building’s history.
P.S. I am so loving this apartment!!!!
