Looking for FREE on a Friday night in NYC? Show up at MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) between the hours of 4:00 and 8:00 p.m. for free entry, compliments of Target.
Don’t freak out about the long line. It moves fast. However, do not bring a backpack or you’ll find yourself standing in yet another long line that moves SLOWLY. Trust me, voice of experience here.
My main objective was to view the photography gallery dedicated to the work of a couple hundred years of female photographers. Before I ventured to the third floor, and since it was such a beautiful evening out, I first visited the sculpture garden. I wanted to check out the wish tree, a tribute to Yoko Ono and John Lennon’s campaign for world peace.
Pretty simple process. You write down a wish or a dream on a tag and attach it to the branch of a tree. When it’s completely covered with wishes, the tags are removed and placed in a glass box on the second floor. Then they’re shipped off to the Imagine Peace Tower in Iceland. Seems more logical they would go to Santa at the North Pole, but who am I to comment.
As I entered the buiding, I heard screams, screams and more screams. WHAT the heck? Seems Ms. Ono installed a participatory piece where she invites anyone visiting the museum to yes, SCREAM. ” 1. against the wind 2. against the wall 3. against the sky.”
Different volumes, different pitches. The first few times, OK. But after hearing this for the next hour or so, it became dreadful. Thank god by the time I made it to the very end of the gallery on the third floor either they had run out of screamers, or either I had finally tuned them out. Peace at last.
What extremes. My last visit to MoMA showcased Marina Abramovic. She sat there for hours not saying a word. I liked her.
