I’m referencing my book,The Best Things to do in New York City – 1001 Ideas, and found a gem right in my backyard. Well kinda…only 40 blocks to and 40 back to see the largest cathedral in the world. So I trekked up to the upper upper west side to view the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine. Everything about this cathedral is huge. It holds up to 5,000 people across the length of two football fields and the dome could comfortably contain the height of the Statue of Liberty. It’s still unfinished despite the fact that it was started in 1892.
On the grounds, as shown in the picture, is the Peace Fountain depicting the struggle of good and evil. The fountain is encircled by small, whimsical animal figures cast in bronze from pieces sculpted by children. Very cool.
More importantly, this cathedral is in an area that is probably 95% Hispanic and African-American. Walking into this neighborhood really brings the awareness of being the minority. So it was a good opportunity to experience the tables being turned…an experience all of us should have as often as possible.
