Pianos showing up on the streets, parks and plazas? What the heck?
The idea was created by artist Luke Jerram of the UK whose “art” has been touring internationally since 2008. Deemed “Play Me, I’m Yours,” the tour has scattered 60 pianos in all five boroughs of the city so amateurs and professionals have the chance to “tickle the ivories.” All are intended for public use and each piano is an individual work of art. When interviewed, Jerram said the idea came from visiting his local launderette. “I saw the same people there each weekend and yet no one talked to one another. I suddenly realized that within a city, there must be hundreds of these invisible communities, regularly spending time with one another in silence. I hoped that by placing a piano into the space it would act as a catalyst for conversation.”
I couldn’t resist capturing this cutie! And note that several folks were chatting it up with her parents. Brilliant Luke, just brilliant!
