Ahhh…there’s an explosion happening on the High Line with all the new growth and fabulous color resulting from our warm spring days! Finally! Several of you ask me about the story behind the pink bloom surrounding the rail line in my last posting…so here’s the scoop…
The High Line was built back in the 1930’s as part of a massive infrastructure to lift freight traffic in the air, removing dangerous trains from the streets of Manhattan. With the last train running on these tracks in 1980, the historic line was under threat of being destroyed. In 1999, residents of the neighborhood, Joshua David and Robert Hammond, advocated for the rail line’s preservation by turning into a public space. After lots of hard work and many investors, well the High Line was born and the rest is history.
Today, the High Line runs from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District to West 34th Street, between 10th and 11th Avenues. Filled with intimate spaces, art and species of grasses, shrubs and trees that originally grew along the rail bed, it makes for an incredible elevated park.
Sharing some views from the High Line…
Later this year, the third and final section of the High Line (aka High Line at the Rail Yards) will open to the public. I had the wonderful opportunity to join in on a tour of the final phase last fall and while basking in the spring glory of it all…realized I never got around to posting about it. Anyway, the final section will add another half mile to the overall park and will take us almost to the Hudson River. Seeing it in the raw before construction started, along with some unique sculptures tailored to the area was a special opportunity. I’m sure it’ll be so worth the wait!
Phase three…au naturel…
Along with views of the rail yard itself…
Enjoy your weekend!

I guess this last phase of the High Line is one of the reasons why we will need to go back for a visit, Robin. But just ONE of the reasons, of course. 🙂

What a lovely idea. Hasn’t this been used in a movie already and I think an episode of Criminal Minds. I just think it’s a great way to recycle what you have and turn it into a thing of beauty.
gotham girl says
Not sure about the movie…but totally agree that it’s the perfect way to use something existing instead of tearing it all down! Thanks for visiting Cheryl!

De beaux détails. Des endroits rarement visités et loin de tout.
Un cadrage fantastique sur la quatrième photo (affiche avec la bouche et les escaliers sur le bêtiment).
Une belle exploration… urbaine. Bonne continuation à toi !
