…Oh the sweet smell of lavender mixing with the cool breeze coming off the Long Island Sound… Just a short walk from the bus stop* and you’ve arrived at the lavender farm…Lavender by the Bay in East Marion, Long Island.
The weekend was the last chance to view the full bloom, the final parade of the season.
So the possibility screamed…
FIELD TRIP!
Lavender by the Bay is one of the largest lavender farms in the United States. Family based, they’ve been growing their lavender for over 15 years. They offer seasonal fresh cut bunches, dried lavender, lavender plants, lavender sachets, honey from their own beehives (and trust me it is awesome!) and many other fun lavender crafts. You may also find them, weather permitting, as part of the many markets (GreenMarket) spread across the city. But, there’s nothing like a visit to the farm!
* Hampton Jitney bus service from Manhattan via the North Fork Line to East Marion. Cost is $19 each way. A good portion of your day is on the bus, mainly getting in and out of Manhattan due to traffic congestion. But there’s wi-fi connection, comfy seats, a bottle of water and a snack included, and nice people operating the bus. Entrance to the lavender fields is $8, but you can apply that to any purchase from their open air gift shop. You can pick your own which is highly recommended to get the full appreciation of what goes on to harvest the lavender. Also, there are a few picnic tables around on the farm too. What more could you ask for in a field trip?
There’s nothing like a visit during bloom,
so mark your calendars and watch their website for updates in 2014.
