This is what I love about not having a destination in mind when traveling and discovering parts of a city. Just wander aimlessly and who knows what little gem you may uncover…and that’s exactly what happened while meandering in San Telmo, a barrio of Buenos Aires, Argentina.
A hotel type entry…artsy, bohemian…hmm…what could it be? Up the steps to find out! Located at Balcarce 1053, is La Galeria del Viego Hotel, a two story hotel built in 1860 with 66 rooms complete with beautiful spanish styled patios. Before I fast forward to today, the hotel turned into a hospital out of necessity during the yellow fever epidemic and then later a tenement for poor families and then a boarding house. Thank goodness someone had the foresight in the 1980’s to turn it into a center for artists to create, showcase and sell their work.
Some of my own interpretations from just wandering around inside…
Truly…a hidden gem in San Telmo…
Coming up…Gabriel del Campo…antiques with character and presence…in San Telmo.
