If I were to ever live in Buenos Aires, San Telmo would be the barrio of choice. Bohemian with lots of historic charm along with a big dose of wabi-sabi…my kind of place! A neighborhood filled with antique stores, art galleries and tango houses, San Telmo really comes alive on Sundays with their street market.
Featuring local merchants and street performers, the cobblestone street of Calle Defensa is packed with locals as well as tourists.
So fun to wander around in the midst of total chaos of people and performers!
Looking for a new mate gourd? Plenty to be found here as well as leather goods, jewelry, old books, local art, stuff from grandma’s attic…you name it.
Along the way you’ll come to an everyday market housed in a huge old wrought-iron building. From fresh produce to antiques, just about anything imaginable can be found here as well. I love finding old dolls to photograph and this market provided many opportunities.
As mentioned earlier, the area is filled with antiques and art…so coming up next is one antique store and an art house that can’t be missed if you find yourself in San Telmo. So stay tuned!

Astrid would have to go to the market early before the total chaos, but other than that, we’re IN! Our kind of place. Don’t you just love finding the barrios where you feel like you could live and call it home!
