According to folklore the city Antwerp received its name from a legend involving a mythical giant called Antigoon. He expected a toll from those crossing the river in the area, and for those who refused? He severed one of their hands and threw it into the river. Eventually, the giant was slain by a young hero named Brabo, who cut off the giant’s own hand and flung it into the river. Hence the name Antwerpen, from Dutch hand werpen—similar to Old English hand and wearpan which means “to throw.”
Really enjoyed the interpretation at that incredible train station I mentioned in the previous post…
And at the center of the Grote Markt, the Brabo Fountain…right in front of the city hall…
Total heaven. Love, love, love…Antwerp!
Next up? This adorable apartment in the heart of Antwerp…down the street from Lomography…beside of a fantastic restaurant named Berlin…and up the street from the beer emporium – the Kulminator. (more on that little gem a bit later..)
