Moist roasted chicken, delicous white rice, mouth watering pork shoulder…Yummers!
This is exactly what you’ll find entering a little hole-in-the-wall restaurant on 125th street in Harlem. Half dozen bar stools with mama in the kitchen, sons working the crowd and dad overseeing it all. No menu, no check at the end…just plain ol’ words, albeit some times hard to understand. (But that’s part of the adventure!)
Welcome to Lechonera la Isla. I just love little mom and pop businesses. You can just tell they put their heart and soul into their work, doing their best to support their family. Can’t wait to return, as I realized afterwards I missed seeing their empanadas in the window!
And if you’re lucky, you’ll get to meet “the mayor of 125th street!” What a charmer!

You’re amazing me, Robin, by how much you’re getting around to see your neighborhood! I find myself following you like a little puppy dog everywhere you go. 🙂

Love what Ginnie wrote. It is true. With your ‘adventures’ in your backyard, we get to know your neighbourhood.
Great shot of the Mayor.

Hello Robin! I’m a friend and classmate of Robert. He gave me this site to stop in and see your work. Wow I like the way you shoot and record where you have been. Lots of great info on different places for NYC and other places. When we go back to NYC I really want to check out that place on 125th. We went there but didn’t see that neat place!! Next time!! Keep up the good work of detailing of great photos, comments and using the Great Americans who live there too!! Thanks for sharing! You are good at what you do! God Bless!
