Remember all the controversy surrounding the islamic cultural center near Ground Zero? The community center, named Park51 Center, opened last week and if you happen to be in the Wall Street area of Manhattan stop in and check it out.
There’s a photography exhibit going on now that pays tribute to the diversity within NYC. Titled NY Children, the exhibit represents 160 ethnicities around the world living within the five boroughs of New York City. The photographer from Brooklyn, Danny Goldfield, got the idea for the project after he came across flowers, candles and a makeshift memorial in front of a gas station while driving through Mesa, Arizona. He met the owner of the gas station (Rana) whose brother was killed a few days after 9/11 when he was mistaken for someone from the Middle East because of his turban. Even more interesting is how another one of his brothers was killed while driving his taxi in San Francisco.
Goldfield was inspired by Rana’s refusal to live in fear and came up with the idea to photograph a child from every country on earth and find them all living in NYC. His own hope to bring neighbors together.
Regardless of your thoughts surrounding the center, the exhibition is well done and very heartwarming!
