Of course if one ventures close to Union Square then one must go to Strand bookstore. So one did. I’m always fascinated when I enter this store. It’s chaos. Everywhere. It’s been deemed as one of the ten best used bookstores in America and certainly one of the largest collections of publishers’ overstock, used, rare, and out-of-print books.
Back in the 1890’s it was one of 48 bookstores on Book Row and ran from Union Square to Astor Place. Today, the Strand is the sole survivor. Founded by Ben Bass, his son Fred and Fred’s daughter Nancy, now own and operate it with over 200 employees. Way cool.
